Stories of the Slimes

Chapter 1

I opened my eyes. I was in a cave, near a small trickle of water. All I knew was that my name was Chaos. I was feeling a bit thirsty, so I squelched ove...

Squelch? That doesn't sound right! I moved a bit closer to the water, where it had flowed into a small dip. I saw myself, a small, blue-tinted, slimy blob. Slime... I felt that Slime was the type of creature I was, squelching through caves with our breathren.

Where are my brothers and sisters? They should be close by. I should go have a look.

I squelched off down the cave. On my way, I saw some interesting things. There was this glowing red stuff in he walls. I touched it, and it flashed, sending a small jolt down my arm. It ticked, so I laughed, and touched it again. I made it my point to touch any and every bit of it on my way down.

I also saw another creature, living in the caves like me. It had 8 red eyes, and scuttled past me, taking no notice of what I was doing. I tried to call out "Excuse me!", but he did not answer.

I reached a fork in the path. Should I go left, or should I go right? I looked down the right path, but there was nothing of interest, but down the left one, there seemed to be lots of the red stuff. That seemed a better way to go, so I took it.

I went further and further down, squelching all the way. I reached a dead end, and was instantly annoyed. I would have to go all the way back up, and...

I heard a noise coming from a dark corner, and turned around. ANOTHER SLIME! I was ecstatic! I jumped over to it, and stood still. While I was blue (or so I thought) it was a delicate pink. I reached out, as did it, and we touched...

...and I saw what was in his mind. He had come all this way, just to find me! I knew that he felt happy too, and we moved closer, and hugged each other. Suddenly, I felt the membranes of my body disolve, as did his. We kind of... fell into each other until we were one larger pink-blue mass of gelatinous slime. I stopped falling, and saw a flash. Suddenly, I felt... different. Then I realized it. We were sharing our thoughts!

It was true. Both our bodies and our minds had combined, and we had become bigger as well. I now found out that my sister's name was Wynryp (And, of course, that she was female)

I can't believe that he didn't know that I was a girl! It should be ovbious! Well, anyway, we should go find some other slimes and see if we can find out why we're here.

I agreed. We both jumped back up the tunnel. She had never seen the red stuff, having been in the tunnel since she appeared, so I showed her what it was and what it did. She was shocked at first, but hen laughed. She said that...

It felt really funny, like someone had hit her, but it didn't hurt. I was surprised that such a thing hadn't already been taken from the wall. We then heard a sound, and broke apart in fear. When we were apart, I still felt Chaos' mind, but not as much as before. We moved backwards until we were against the wall, right next to the red stuff.

It stood taller than both of us when we were combined, and walked on two legs. It went over to a patch of rock and hit it with a strange tool until it broke, then picked up the pieces. It looked over at the red stuff in the rock behind us, and grinned with glee. It then put something on the wall that lit up the area, which made us close our eyes for a second. When we opened them back up, it's expression was surprised, and it pulled out another tool, which was long and looked sharp.

It swung the tool at us, narrowly missing Chaos. We leaped sideways as it prepared for another swing, and quickly jumped downwards, further into the cave.

Too late did we realize our mistake. Down there was a dead end, and once we got cornered, the creature would kill us easily. We had nowhere to go. Or did we? "Wynryp! Were there any small holes down there?"

"I think there was, but I'm not sure" We kept jumping, but the creature was catching up. We reached the bottom, but I couldn't remember where it might be. "Where is it, where is it!", I whispered to myself, all the while as the creature was getting closer.

"There it is" Wynryp yelled, as she dived into a shadow. I followed her, trusting that she knew what she was doing. I didn't lad as I expected, rather, I didn't land at all. As I was falling, I heard a faint "Damn!" from above.

Chapter 2

I felt immense heat and saw some orange-red light below us as I was falling. I knew this was bad, so I screamed out "STOP!" at the top of my lungs, and expanded my body to grind to a halt before I fell into this hot red stuff.

Wynryp started to slow down in front of me, with a meaningless scream. Of course, I didn't understand what she said, and so rammed into her while she was slowing, making her lose her grip on the sides. As we fell again, she muttered curses at me in her brain.

Idiot, moron, imbecile! I hope he dies now, for being such a stupid ball of slime. We were nearing the end of the tunnel, and were about to fall into the open, when I heard a scream of "NO!" and felt something crash into me, dissolving my membrane and slowing my fall.

I'm not going to let another of my kin die! I rammed into the pink one, and merged with her, expanding our body to halt the fall into the lava. I felt another one, above my head, and looked up, seeing that he was blue.

The mass of both Wynryp and the other slime pushed against the wall stopped our fall. I said shakily "Greetings. I'm Chaos." The slime thought of an image of himself, black as the darkness, and simply said "Paulo. Why are you here?" I explained what had happened since I awoke, and he nodded. At the end, he said "Okay. I know a way down, but since your little friend here had fallen asleep from shock, you're going to have to merge with us to help move her." I complied, and shuddered as a saw what was in his mind.

I tried to keep the dark thought from his mind, but it was no use. He saw what had happened, and I was forced to relive the memory through his head.

A small, naive little yellow slime was standing in front of me. He saw the hole, and moved towards it. I said to it "don't go in there!" but he did anyway. I jumped after him, and tried to catch up to him, but I was too late. He fell into the lava, not before touching me. His scream pierced my mind, and I felt his pain as he burned, and the inky blackness seeped into my body and soul. I vowed never to see another slime die again.

I saw his story, and I felt his pain. I did not know how it would feel to be helpless while another of his kin died, but he had an inkling, and he knew that it wouldn't be pleasant to say the least.

However, there was a job to do. Paulo sent him an idea, of sticking to the roof and rolling across until he got to an area with ground beneath it. He used his strength to aid Paulo in the manoeuvre, and was surprised how hard it was to move Wynryp while she was asleep. He knew why he needed to help.

Chaos had strength, I grant him that. I think he’s the eldest of us, from what I’ve heard. He’s pretty good with his movement, too. We reached the lip of the hole. This would be the most dangerous part, as the weight of all 3 of them would be hard to keep on the roof. He liked problem solving. It helped him to avoid thinking about what had happened…

“Now Chaos, just focus on carrying Wynryp. If you can handle that easily enough, think about sticking to the roof.” I had only recently found out that we have he ability to do this, and I did not know whether it would hold or not.

We inched across the roof, careful not to lose our grip, for if we did, then it would be over for all three of us. The air started to cool down, and I knew we were nearing an edge. I started to relax, and that was a mistake. Suddenly, I started to un-merge from the others. I managed to swing myself up quickly before I fell into the lava, but I nearly didn't make it. "Why can't you be more careful!" Paulo yelled "We can't afford to lose ANYONE!"

I leant up against the other two, and tried to merge again, but it wasn't working. No matter how hard I tried, I still couldn't connect, and I could tell Paulo was tiring. I had an idea.

"Why don't you un-merge with Wynryp and I'll catch her?" Chaos said. "I don't think you can hang on much longer. It's our only choice."
"But what if we drop her?" I said, having doubts about this.
"What else can we do! This plan even sounds stupid to me, but it's the only chance we've got!" Chaos growled, fire in his words. I then knew that, if it were possible, then he'd be the one to do it.

"Alright. I'm going to drop her when I say drop. Okay, here we go."
"Three..." I was having doubts about this.
"Two..." Could this really work?
"One..." I can't look...

"DROP!"

Chapter 3

I reached out, and reached, and when I had gone as far as I could, I reached a bit further. I brushed her gelatinous skin, and grabbed, pulling with all my strength to get her up. No chance was she going to fall. Not while I'm still alive!

Chaos started to pull her up, and I ran over and tried to help. I was dead tired, however, and probably did nothing, but I tried anyway. She slowly started coming up, and so we pulled even harder.

I started inching along the roof, dragging Wynryp with me. She was a lot of dead weight to hold, but I slogged it out, and just dragged some more. Finally, we were over the shore of this lava-lake, and we dropped down ungracefully, and crashed into a deep slumber as soon as we hit the ground.

-----

Ugh. My mind was a blur, barely making out the details from what happened before our sleep. Lava... Wynryp... Roof... FALLING! I nearly jumped up before I realized that I was only remembering. "We must have been sleeping for ages." I muttered to myself, and flinched when I heard a reply.

"Well, I'd say about a sun cy... Wait... Maybe a bit less." the voice said, and I got up, looking around for the source of the voice. "It's so hard to tell down here. What's your name, anyway?" The direct question put me off of my guard, and I stuttered "Paulo." before finally finding the source of the voice.

I could see he was a bit shocked to see us, so I tried to be friendly. "We're Fross and Preid. Well, at least, I'm Fross." I said, trying to strike up some banter. "We were about to wake you up, but it seems you've done the job for us."

The two merged slimes appeared to be a light blue and a light green. I somehow knew that Fross was the green one. Something about what they had said earlier bugged me. "What is a 'sun'?" I asked.

"You don't know what the sun is? Well, it's the big ball of light in the sky outside." "Outside? Sky?" he said, confused. He obviously hadn't seen the surface yet, so I offered to show him.

We touched, and I felt us merge. Then I saw the... abomination that was his mind, and recoiled back in horror, breaking the mergance. I accidentally ran into Chaos, who opened his eyes and groaned. He felt my horror, and stood up.

"What's wrong?" I murmured to him, getting up. I saw an image of what he had seen, and I too was disturbed. It was like the two minds of those two slimes had gone beyond a normal merging, had completely combined. It was impossible to tell where one ended and another began.

"Why did you move away?" I asked, worried. "What did we do wrong?" Preid thought that it might have been a big shock, the outside, but I doubted that. The outside would be a happy-shock, not a horrific-shock. I had seen his terrified expression, and knew that something about us scared them.

I then knew what I had to do. "Let me merge with you, and you will realize why we are a bit... shocked." I said, and Paulo turned back to me, his expression showing surprise at such a bold move. I moved towards Fross and Preid, reached out, and slowly fell into their mind.

Was he crazy? Did he not see what he was getting in to? This is madness! He was going to be engulfed, and there was nothing I could do about it. I shifted back a bit and tapped Wynryp, while whispering for her to be quiet. If something bad happened, I think I'm going to want some backup.

He merged with us, and we saw ourselves through his eyes. We now understood why they had thought us so strange. We decided to show them why we were like this.

I opened my eyes to a grassy hill. "Where am I?" I asked myself, looking around. Beside me, there seemed to be another like me. We moved closer to each other, and touched.

We merged for the very first time! I saw myself through Fross' eyes. I was blue as the sky, and it felt wonderful. Someday, I wondered if I could ever enter that sky. To fly, to be free, that would be my destiny.

I felt something in Preid, an eternal brotherhood. I knew that he would be my companion through thick and thin. We roamed the surface, marveling at the wonders, and night began to fall. We heard a crunch to our right, and fell closer together in fear. Something broke from our fear, an even stronger wall, and we merged more than ever before.

I was unwilling to tell more about our past, for now. I'm sure he could guess what had happened, anyway, and if he didn't, he would probably find out later anyway.

Their story resonated through Chaos' mind into my own. It seemed somewhat similar to my own. On the other hand, they had never experienced death, and for that, I was glad. I'm not sure they would have the willpower to keep on going if they had seen what I'd seen. I noticed Wynryp walk up to the others, and begin to talk.

"Welcome. I'm Wynryp, companion of these two. I've heard your story, and there is something I would like." I said, waiting for a reply. "What is it that you want, Wynryp?" Fross queried.

"I want to see the surface."
